Flooding is a significant concern for residents of Trowell and Stapleford, and addressing it effectively requires community involvement and prompt reporting. Our local Flood Action Group, formed in 2023 with support from the National Flood Forum, is dedicated to managing and mitigating flood risks in our area. Here’s why your participation matters and how you can contribute.
Why Reporting a Flood Matters
Flood Risk Management Authorities depend on the number of flood reports they receive to assess and address flood risks effectively. If flooding incidents are not reported, these agencies might struggle to secure the necessary funding to protect our communities. By reporting floods, you help ensure that adequate measures are taken to prevent and manage future incidents.
Concerns About Insurance and Property Sales
Many residents worry about the impact of reporting floods on their insurance premiums and property values. Here’s what you need to know:
- Insurance: You might be eligible for the Flood Re initiative, which helps make flood cover affordable as part of your home insurance. For more details, visit floodre.co.uk or contact the National Flood Forum.
- Property Sales: Legally, you must inform prospective buyers about any flooding history. Pre-purchase surveys are likely to reveal such information, so transparency is crucial. The National Flood Forum can provide case-by-case advice.
How to Report a Flood
Whether you’re dealing with blocked drains, main river flooding, or sewage flooding, it’s crucial to report the incident to the appropriate authorities:
- Nottinghamshire County Council: For blocked drains and gullies, visit Nottinghamshire County Council’s website or call customer service at 0300 500 8080.
- Environment Agency: For main river flooding, contact the Incident Hotline at 0800 80 70 60 or the Floodline at 0345 988 1188.
- Severn Trent Water: For sewage flooding, call 0800 783 4444.
If unsure, report to all relevant agencies to ensure the issue is addressed.
