Broxtowe Youth Homelessness are appealing to local businesses to offer short, meaningful work placements to Looked After Children in Nottinghamshire as part of the Care 2 Work programme.
The Issue Care leavers are disproportionately more likely to experience unemployment, mental health issues and homelessness in later life, therefore Broxtowe Youth Homelessness have teamed up with Nottinghamshire County Council and Futures to ensure care leavers in Nottinghamshire have the skills and opportunities they need to become successful, independent adults.
We recognise the transferrable skills that young people in care gain throughout their lives, and we are passionate about showing them how they can apply them in the workplace.
Care 2 Work
Care 2 Work recruits 16–17-year-olds in care on a two-day work readiness programme, helping them identify
their existing skills, learn new employability skills and explore potential career paths. We then match them with
a short work placement in their field of interest, where they will be supported throughout and after to continue
to pursue a career of their choice.
How can your organisation be involved?
You can offer a young person a short work placement. This can be flexible to meet the needs of your business and the young person, from one day up to a whole week, or even a few days spread over a number of weeks.
What support will your organisation be offered?
Organisations who can offer a placement will have access to eLearning, covering safeguarding, health and safety and young people in care that they can complete before the placement begins.
There will be a specific contact throughout the placement to offer support, guidance and answer any queries.
What is expected from your organisation?
We want young people to gain real life experience in a field of work they have an interest in. This could be their first steps towards the career of their choice, so it is important that they have a meaningful, rounded experience.
Each young person will complete a Work Placement Handbook to record their experience. Within the handbook the organisation will support them in completing an induction, a timetable and feedback at the end of the placement. A copy of the handbook will be made available to the organisation before the placement. The organisation will ‘be expected to’ support them.
What if they need specialist clothing/equipment?
We have access to funds that can be used for items that will support young people into work. Please let us know at the earliest opportunity if you think any specific items will be needed.
Businesses like yours can be part of the first steps for these young people into the workplace, providing real life work experience, increasing their self-worth and confidence, and providing a reference to support them into their next stage. If you are interested, please make contact.
