This evening, I supported a small rise in council tax at Broxtowe Borough Council—a decision I did not take lightly. In the lead-up to an election, it would have been easy to oppose any increase. But my priority is not political convenience; it is doing what is right for the people I represent.
For a Band A property—of which there are many in my ward—this increase amounts to just 7p a week. That’s a tiny amount, but collectively, it will make a meaningful difference in supporting the vital services our community relies on.
One of the main reasons I backed this rise is because of the incredible work done by Broxtowe Borough Council’s community team. They support residents, tackle social issues, and help make our borough a better place to live. Whether it’s engaging with young people, assisting those in need, or working to keep our communities safe, their work is invaluable.
I have always spoken up on the issues that matter, including knife crime and community safety. In the past, I have been told to sit down when raising these important concerns—but I didn’t then, and I never will. Representing my constituents means standing up for what I believe is right, even when it is difficult or unpopular.
This small rise in council tax will help ensure that our community team can continue their brilliant work. If 7p a week can help protect and improve the services that so many rely on, then it was the right decision to support it. I will always stand by the people I represent, and I will never shy away from doing what is best for our community.
